Jheronimus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, the Knip family of painters from Tilburg: Brabant's art history is rich and fascinating. On this tour, you will be introduced to a number of masters from the South. As diverse as their work is, there is one common denominator: the artists you will meet all worked as part of a family or studio. Becoming a professional artist entailed a long period of apprenticeship; you started as a sidekick and ended, hopefully, as a fully-fledged master. This made an artist's career inaccessible to many. Each of the Brabant masters came from good families and had the means and the culture to study.
About the presentation
Starting with the emulators and imitators of Jheronimus Bosch, the tour takes you along the landscape painting of three generations of painters from the Brueghel family. The Brueghels were a unique and very close-knit family; this was their strength and the key to their great success. Next, you get to know the 17th-century masters of the baroque era, such as Theodoor van Thulden and Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert. Lastly, you meet three generations of the Knips, a family of painters from Tilburg. Nicolaas Frederik Knip (1741-1808) was the 'founding father' of an entire family of painters, of whom the most famous are son Joseph Augustus Knip (1777-1847) and granddaughter Henriette Ronner-Knip (1821-1909).
